Carpet cleaning machines can be rented in plenty of places, for example, grocery stores, hardware stores, department stores and more. They may have different models available for rent. Choose one most appropriate your needs.
For example, despite living in a fairly rural location there are over 20 places to rent carpet cleaning machines within a 20 mile drive!
You also need to buy cleaning solutions when you rent. Make sure you read the labels to get the right types and amounts for your carpet cleaning. Bottles usually measure capacity in square feet, so you may want to measure your carpets first. You'll probably need a general cleaning solution as well as a spot cleaner, and perhaps something that neutralizes odors like cat urine.
Why would you rent a carpet cleaner? They are not that expensive to buy and often pay for themselves after a few uses.
There are several reasons:
1) The biggest reason to rent a carpet cleaner is that rental machines, such as "Rug Doctor brand" carpet cleaners, are stronger and more pwerful than most consumer machines. Your machine may be great for cleaning a carpet or two, or spot cleaning, but if you want to deep clean the entire house fairly fast, a rental often makes a lot of sense. Yes, people who own carpet cleaners rent more powerful machines occasionally for a whole house or deep cleaning.
2) Owning a carpet cleaner means you need to store it somewhere. You may not have the storage space. For example, ours takes up space in the basement which is already too full, and it always seems to be in the way.
3) Rental is the perfect choice for someone who doesn't want to worry about maintenance. Although most carpet cleaners come with a one year warrantee or similar, any repair or warrantee work is still a hassle. Of course you also may never need any repairs like my mother in law whose Bissell is still going strong literally decades after purchase.
Carpets generally dry in 2-6 hours. You can hasten their drying by opening windows for ventilation if the climate is appropriate and by using fans and dehumidifiers, which you can also rent at many places that provide carpet cleaner rental.
I own a carpet cleaner, but very occasionally rent as well.
